Dear Strand Fan,

Tonight!   DR. ROCK and the ROLLERS.   This energetic 50s/60s group will be a blast.  Plenty of tickets are available. The performance starts at 7:30pm.

The SHS Jazz Band performed their annual concert at the Strand last weekend.  The band is was conducted by Mr. Russell Smith (in his 32nd year) and assistant conductor Mrs. Allison Anderson.     They performed an energetic concert. The students played a 15 chart first set followed by a 16 chart second set!  That is equivalent to any professional big band. We heard everything from String of Pearls to All The Things You Are. The first set included a killer arrangement of George Gershwin’s SUMMERTIME from his opera Porgy and Bess.   It cooked! The SHS students were impressive. They played well and we look forward to having them back next year.

Advantage Shelby County held their graduation at the Strand this week.  This was the first class to complete the program. Advantage Shelby County is unique.   The post secondary educational opportunity extends to every high school senior in Shelby County.   We are proud of the graduates and the program.

Retro Bill came to Shelbyville for a motivational talk to Shelbyville 5th graders.  The Strand was packed with kids hearing his inspiring message. Retro Bill likes the music loud.   He got a good dose of just how loud the Strand can get. We vibrated all the items off the sound booth shelf!    He knows his stuff, as the energy the music created was incredible. Thank you to Floyd Hastings and the D.A.R.E. program for bringing Retro Bill to the Strand.

Strand Fun Fact:  Did you know that if you make a donation it is sent to the Blue River Community Foundation?   While the Strand doesn’t solicit like most not for profits, we do accept donations. When we started the Foundation was our fiscal sponsor.  This was a vital function for our new organization. We have long since received our 501c3 designation, but our board has opted to remain in partnership with the Foundation.  We welcome the oversight that this arrangement provides. Funds given to the Strand are subject to the greatest scrutiny. We love the oversight and partnership.

Our volunteers were amazing last week (as they will be next week too!).  During the Saturday night Jazz Band concert Mike R. was at the Strand about 5pm to paint the last remaining office.  He just showed up. Sure enough, but the end of the performance he as done. During the Advantage Shelby County graduation we had the opportunity to see several Strand volunteers on stage receiving recognition.   They are a wonderful group of volunteers and future community leaders.

Last week the Strand participated in a round table discussion with our friends and neighbors from the Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre in Bloomington, and the Park Theatre in North Vernon.   We talked about the issues we face, and how we are each moving forward to do positive things for our communities. As you know, the Strand is ultra focused on our core values and mission. It is nice to be with others of similar minds. We look forward to meeting again in the fall.

Next week we have the Shelbyville High School JAG Graduation Ceremony on Monday, and our Community Treasure Series Lecture on Wednesday.   This month’s lecture will feature the Shelbyville Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol. We hope you can attend.

On Thursday we welcome the Shelbyville Middle School Music Department for their JAZZ SHOWCASE.   The performance is at 7pm and admission is free.

Next weekend we welcome up and coming country music musician COLTON CHAPMAN to the Strand’s stage.   Tickets are still available for the concert.

As always the Strand is fun.  We are looking forward to kicking off our summer concert series tonight!   Thank you for all the support. See you at the Strand.
