Dear Strand Fan,

Did everyone eat too much?   If you are not working today we have an option to Black Friday shopping…come to the Strand.   Today at 1pm and 7pm we will show the holiday movie ELF.   This classic will be on the big screen and is FREE.   Come out, sit in the balcony, have some popcorn and enjoy this holiday classic from your friends at the Strand.

Last week we had something happen that is rare at the Strand.  We had to cancel the DR. ROCK and the ROLLERS concert.   The high winds caused the power lines behind the library to short and we lost 2 of our 3 phases of electricity.   No electricity, no performance.   It happened at 5pm and Duke Energy didn’t get the power restored until 7:45

We had to make the decision to cancel at 7pm, which at that time we still had no power.   If you purchased tickets online, you will receive a full refund on your credit card.  If you purchased tickets at Mickey’s T-Mart, we will refund your purchase price at any Strand performance.  You can reply to this email to arrange a refund too.    The good news is Darry Hood (Dr. Rock) will return to the Strand in the spring to perform the concert.   The tickets will be good for that event too if you wish to just hold on to them.   Thank you to everyone for your patience.   Needless to say our volunteers were a little stressed, but things seem to be working out.  We were pleased with the performance of our emergency lighting.   It isn’t often it is put into use!

We received holiday wishes from Celtic Woman star Chloë Angew.   She writes:

Hope all is well with our lovely Strand Theatre family!

Sending you lots of Thanksgiving wishes from us.

Chloë will return to the Strand in the Spring of 2018.  Once the date is set, we will let you know.

This weekend we welcome back the Shelby County Players for the two week run of HOUSE AT POOH CORNER.   The Strand has been a busy place since the Shelby County Players last performed.   We have hosted 21 events, so things have to be cleaned up a bit for them to load in the show.   Our volunteers put the theater into shape backstage, stored all our audio equipment, and removed the miscellaneous items it takes to present our concerts, lecture, etc.   We are ready to go and looking forwarded to the talented cast presenting HOUSE AT POOH CORNER.   This play will be a must see for you, your family, kids, and grandkids!    It opens on December 1, 2017 at 7:30pm.   Admission is only $5 advance or $6 at the door.   We hope to see you attending live theater here in the heart of downtown Shelbyville.

Last week we did a test.   We are planning a Saturday morning classic cartoon series.   We tested the concept after the parade.   Thank you to the 145 patrons young and younger (we guess that is better than “0ld”) who came after the parade to see the Holiday Cartoon Classics.    We are in the process of booking these Saturday cartoon events in 2018.   This will be something different for us with the goal of getting patrons comfortable in the Strand so they can come back to a live event.    We will keep you posted.

We fixed a nagging problem this week.   Actually Steve D. and Darin M. fixed the problem.  You might have noticed that our marquee had two panels that were not lit at night.  (Warning, tech talk ahead) Our marquee has four lamps per panel.  Two run every night, and the other two are lit when we have a show making four total.  We swapped the wiring for the low power and full power lamps.   Bingo, they are lit at night!   This is a short term fix, as we are planning on upgrading to LED lighting in the spring.   Our marquee pulls 10 amps from dusk to dawn and 20 amps for a performance.   We will reduce this to about two amps.   It will save us a tremendous amount, allow us to be good stewards of our resources, and make the marquee of our theater more reliable.   Thank you Steve and Darin!

We have continued booking for 2018.   We have over one hundred events booked.   We will hold a volunteer fair at the Strand in January.   This would be a great chance for you to get in on the fun of volunteering at the Strand!  Very oddly we have fielded questions about working for the Strand.   We are a 100% volunteer organization and have no paid staff.  We are not hiring any part-time or paid staff.    We are proud that we present over 100 performances a year with our dedicated, talented, and focused volunteers.

Suggestions come from everywhere for the Strand’s programming.   This week Strand patron John W. reminded us that this is the 75th anniversary of CASABLANCA.   We did some checking and it was released for general audiences on January 23, 1943.   Guess what we are doing on January 23, 2018?   Wow you are smart!  Yes, we are showing CASABLANCA.    The movie will start at 7:00pm and we will have our friends from the Fly serving at the bar.   They will feature a FRENCH 75 as ordered in the movie.  French 75 is a cocktail made from gin, Champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. It is also called a 75 Cocktail, or in French simply a Soixante Quinze (Seventy Five).   The night will be fun.  The restored print is amazing on our big screen.  The balcony will be open!

The weekend of DONNIE BAKER will be busy.  Our neighbors at First Baptist Church will present their Christmas drama COME LET US ADORE HIM.   They perform on December 13, 15, and 16.   Performances start at 7pm.   On Saturday December 16 we have Donnie Baker at 7pm and 9:30pm.   So far we have yet to have a parking issue as their holiday performances has always coincided with Donnie Baker.   Let’s hope we both have a full house!

FENNS STATION will perform at the Strand on December 23, 2017.  This is our final performance of the 2017 season.   This is a reunion of this very popular local band.   They will be joined by Blue Ridge Banned.   Tickets are available at Mickey’s T-Mart and online at

Thank you for your support.   It was a topsey tervey week, but we made it.   There are many great events coming and we hope you can attend.   See you at the Strand!
