Strand Theatre Weekly Email - April 16, 2008
Hello All…
This has been an interesting week at the Strand. Gordon H. is the man of mystery, or should I say mysteries. I can tell you this now, but early this week Gordon finished painting the west outside stage door. This door has stuck ever since we have had the theatre. Everyone who used it got accustomed to giving it a good shove to open. Gordon scraped all the old built up paint off and gave it a fresh coat. He pulled the door shut that night thinking nothing about it. The next day, much to Gordon’s surprise, he checked on the door and notice it opened easily, as in no lock easily. Seems as though the only thing keeping that door shut was the old paint! We fabricated a makeshift lock and the following day fixed the existing lock. Don’t tell anyone that we accidentally left the theatre unlocked for about 17 months….oops.
Exiled Few was well attended last Saturday night. We had a great time and so did the audience. The sound was a improved for rock bands with some additions from Joey G. and Ron B. Those who attended can tell you it sounded great. Fun was had by all. After the concert we noticed downstage left what appeared to be flakes like snow. I ask Gordon what they could be. Another Gordon mystery. We found out what is was. The band was so good, the sound was so crisp it literally PEALED THE PAINT off the ceiling! Let’s see, who painted that ceiling. That would be Gordon. After doing some investigation we found that two panels that were repaired must be moving. As they flexed they shed their paint. When we (i.e. Gordon) get energetic, we will erect scaffold and fix it. The things we are learning!
A big thank you to Joey G. for producing the shows these past two weekends. They brought in a diverse and generous crowd. As we go forward, the revenue from events such as these means a tremendous amount the our community. The Strand’s financial health is something that will cause all of us to remain vigilant. Events such as the two weekends of bands help in attaining positive cash flow.
Work is proceeding on the basements, curtains and offices. Steve F. is coordinating those projects. We have applied for some grants to help the restoration of our front facade. We will have to wait until about the middle of May before any work can commence. That’s OK, we’re patient.
If you haven’t experienced live poetry reading, you are in luck. April 24th at 7:00 Three Sisters Books will host a night of poetry reading at the Strand. This event is free. Come and support Carolyn, Mary Kay and Barbara for all the wonderful work they do in the community. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful bookstore.
