Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 24, 2008

Hello All,

This week we have some exciting things at the Strand.   Tonight there will be Poetry Reading in celebration for National Poetry Month.   This event is FREE and starts at 7:00pm.   It is sponsored by Three Sisters Books.    I don’t know about you, but I am interested in seeing (and hearing) what this is all about.   The extent of my limited poetry exposure was going to hear the guy who played King Tut on Batman read poetry at Clowes Hall years ago.    As I recall it was fun. At the time I was in college, so any trip outside of Bloomington was by its very nature fun…..but that is another story.

On Saturday we will here a recital given by students at ShelbyvilleHigh School.   The recital starts at 1:00 and is FREE.    These are talented students that are bringing their musical talent to our stage for the community.    Please support these students as they help us provide live entertainment for our community.    Several of the students are Strand Volunteers, so they helped us get to where we are today.

Steve F. is working on various projects around the building.   He has our middle office cleared and ready for plaster work.   The intent is to renovate those offices so that when the window coverings come off, you will see into a great looking space.    We have to be very careful not to kick up too much dust as we do these projects.   When the theatre was a mess, we didn’t need to worry about dust.   Now it is a different story.   It is a good problem to have.

I think it is now safe to say that our popcorn machine is fixed (I hope I don’t jinx it).   Steve D. and Darin M. made several additional repairs.   Steve F. has run many batches of popcorn, all with success.   Let’s hope that problem is behind us.

This week we are all curious to see if Bob S. is able to cool the theatre as effectively as he heated the place.    The weather is turning warmer, and for the first time we will be running our newly maintained and fixed A/C systems.     We have 20 tons of cooling capacity.    When we tested it last August, it did a great job.   Let’s hope that is still the case today.    Bob will get it purring like a kitten.

The movie screen is on order, so that is in process now.   We are also working diligently on our Use Agreements.   As groups book the theatre, it is necessary to have all our ducks in a row.   This agreement will help with that.   As soon as it is finished it will be posted on our web site.

Speaking of the web site, Shane is working on a method where we can catalog an post all our historical information about the theatre.   It is our hope that the web site will be a research tool for anyone interested in the history of the theatre.

Look forward to seeing you this week at the Strand.   Thanks for your support.

David
