Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 1, 2009
Did you notice? Steve F., Rhonda S. and Gordon H. finished uncovering our windows! Now all 3 sets of windows are open. The windows themselves are completely rebuilt. The finish on the inside is beautiful. This week, weather permitting, the exterior frames will get primed an painted. It is nice to see the Strand look alive from the outside. A boarded up theatre wasn’t a good look for us! Kudos to the Strand team for getting this project done…..well almost done. You see, as we were assembling the last windows, we discovered that over the years we have lost 6 window weights. We have no idea where they went. They could be down inside the wall, but either way, they are lost to us. Do you have any old window weights at your house? If so, please consider donating them to our project. Steve and I used to live next door to each other on Shelby Street. Back then, we BOTH had extra window weights at our houses. Too bad we didn’t see this need coming 20 years ago! If you have any weights, please just respond to this email. Thanks.
Did you catch a film last week at the Strand? It was fun. We had great attendance at all the movies. The first film "The Searchers" really gave us a lesson on movies. If you were there you know what I mean. It was a bit loud for the first 2/3rds of the film. We finally got things adjusted. (Warning tech talk ahead…) Our copy of the film as recorded originally in monaural. At some point in time it was processed into a Stereo signal. When we showed it, we took that reprocessed stereo signal, and played it back in monaural. We learned that we need to really have audio compressors dedicated to our film setup. Ron B. and Joey G. are on it. It took us a little bit of time to figure it out, but after that first hour or so, it was fine the rest of the weekend.
Check out our web site for some pictures of the film event…especially the Zombies that showed up for the late show of "Night of the Living Dead". All we did was clean up blood after that show!
Tonight is Poetry Reading sponsored by our friends at Three Sisters Bookstore. The event starts at 7:00pm and is free. We are in for a real treat, there are 4 very talented poets performing their "Reservoir Dogwoods" tour. Come see their brand of homegrown performance poetry! This event is in support of National Poetry Month. If you haven’t been to one of these events yet, now is the time to experience it for yourself. Hope to see you there.
On Saturday night Smashed Productions will present Faded Daze with special guest Pressed in Black. We look forward to the return engagement of this local band. I’m sure they have a great lineup of tunes that will make for a fun and entertaining evening.
On Sunday, Kelley Baker the "Angry Filmmaker" will be holding a workshop at the Strand. He will discuss making the "extremely low budget" film. Kelley is nationally recognized for his work. This is quite a treat for our local community to have a workshop such as this at our theatre. The workshop starts at 2:00. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
After our events next week, we have a 2 week window to get some addition work completed. On the horizon is enlarging our sound/lighting booth, hanging our stage valance, and building platforms for our spotlights. What will we do when everything is finished? For now, that is something we don’t have to worry about.
Our schedule is packed the next few months. I will be writing to give as much advance notice as possible. We are still in need of a marketing volunteer. This person would be responsible for getting the word out on all these great events. If you are interested, please email me at david.finkel@strand-theatre-shelbyville.org
As always, we are thrilled you take the time to follow our progress and support the Strand. We look forward to seeing you back in your theatre soon!
