Strand Theatre Weekly Email – 04/03/2008
Hello all….
The Gateway Trio concert last Saturday was a lot of fun. We had an audience around 200 to hear the Shelbyville natives sing and tell jokes. Their special guest was Hopkins and Miller. They were fantastic too. Robin Hopkins and Kathleen Miller will be back at the Strand in May. From the taste we got this past week, I’m sure this is one you will not want to miss! Thank you to all the performers for helping the Strand.
This weekend we have 2 events. On Saturday night the 70′s Style rock band "Travis of the Cosmos" will be on the stage starting at 7:00. This is produced by Joey Gaudin of Smashed Productions. Joey has been a supporter and volunteer at the Strand from day one. He is the person responsible for all the video archiving that has been shot throughout the process. We look forward to hearing this band rock the house!
On Sunday we have a public open house from 1:00 – 4:00pm. It is hard to believe it has been one short year. I remember that first week well. The outside temperature was very nice, but the theatre inside was freezing cold. It really needed to be aired out. You who were there remember that. Well, Steve and I got the bright idea to open the doors and let it air out that Sunday. There was a brisk west wind and the temperature was in the mid 60′s. We just weren’t thinking. What happens when you put warm moist air against cold dry surfaces? It was raining INSIDE the theatre. We had so much condensation, we literally had to use a bucket to mop some of it up. We soaked every surface. That night when we realized what happened, I remember Steve saying "That wasn’t too smart, was it?" Fortunately the condensation didn’t hurt a thing (there wasn’t anything at that point that really could be hurt), but it is a fond memory.
Our light board got a quick repair last Friday. It died. Thank you to Steve D. and Ron B. for quickly finding the problem and fixing it.
Steve F. is still working on ripping out our old water pipes from the basement. They will be reworked into the battens for our curtains. We are slowly getting the front basements finished. We have some brick work and mortar patching still left to do. When we cleaned the south basement we found another old concession sign. Bob S. cleaned it up and mounted it on the wall by the west fire exit. Make sure you check it out on Sunday.
Thanks for all the support, look forward to seeing you at the theatre soon!
