2008 Holiday Parade

Published by David under Uncategorized

A hearty bunch of Strand volunteers under the leadership of Cindy H. gathered in the frigid November weather to represent the Strand at the 2008 Shelbyville Holiday Parade.   There was candy for the kids, and flyers for the parents.   The group walked behind the pied piper at the Calliope advertising our free holiday movie.

Our movie was a success.  A small, but brave crowd came for the evenings entertainment.   We planned to get our films going before the end of the first year of operation.  We made it with 6 weeks to spare!

The Calliope lead the way to the Strand!

Santa toots the notes and the crowd follows:

Signs of progress

Published by David under Uncategorized

Our neighbors and supporters Stage Door Graphics donated signs for the exterior of our theatre.    Stage Door is owned by the DeWitt family, former owners of the Strand.    Their years of experience in operating our theatre is always available and greatly appreciated.    Bob Schlick is holding one of the new signs shortly before installation.   Thank you Stage Door Graphics.

Organ Project visitor

Published by David under Uncategorized

At long last, David Bottom of Lexington Kentucky was able to visit the Strand.   David is one of the few theatre organ technicians with experience on Louisville Pipe Organs.   He has been a supporter of our project and helped us in many ways.    His knowledge of the Louisville company and understanding of how they did things will be valuable as we rebuild our organ.    David has found many "pieces and parts" for our project that are extrememly scarce.   In addition to being a meticulous organ technician, David is an expert on safes and their construction.   We still have our safe in the theatre.   It is heavy (1000 pounds) and we don’t quite know what to do with it.   David is helping us with that too.

David was one of the participants in our acquisition of the Louisville Pipe Organ originally installed in the Oriental Theatre in Indianapolis.   In his many trips to this area, he has yet to visit the Strand.   That was finally rectified on June 30, 2008.   We appreciate David’s help and his interest in our project.

Along with the Strand, David is a principle in the restoration of the Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ from the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington.   You can visit his project at http://www.kywurlitzer.com/

Benefit for the Strand - Shelby County Players

Published by David under Uncategorized

The Shelby County Players May 14, 2008 performance of "Musical Comedy Murders 1940" will benefit the Strand Theatre.     This performance will take place at the Shelby Community Theatre at 16 W. Tompkins Street.

Shelby County Players will present "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940", by John Bishop and directed by Tiffany D. Wilson, at Shelby Community Theatre, 16 S. Tompkins St., Shelbyville, on May 9, 10, 14, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and May 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door. The May 14 performance is a benefit for the Strand Theatre. To make reservations, call (317) 392-6844.

This comedy is filled with exaggerated characters and exciting special effects. The creative team for a recent Broadway flop assembles at the spooky estate of a wealthy "angel" for a backer’s audition. The stage door slasher then appears, and bodies start to drop.

Tickets are also available at the Shelbyville Antique Mall at 117 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.
