The Cancer Association of Shelby County held a fundraiser at the Strand Theatre on Saturday February 25, 2012. Grease is the word!
The evening included a silent auction, costume contest and the movie GREASE. The Strand was jumpin’ and jivin’ to the music and dancing of this popular movie.
It was a fun event and raised funds for a worthy cause.

The Strand was SOLD OUT for the comedy performance of Michael Malone on Saturday February 11, 2012. Michael selected the Strand to be the location for the filming of his new comedy DVD. The Strand was proud to be able to host this event. In preparation our Board of Directors along with Michael decided that we needed to have as many seats full as possible.
With a tremendous amount of hard work by many people, the Strand welcomed 379 patrons on Saturday night. Remember, the Strand only has 377 permanent seats. This was what we had hoped. Every seat, including the entire balcony and upper balcony were filled.
The evening started with comedian DJ Dangler. He warmed up the crowd with some very funny material. After his set Strand board member Gary Nolley provided the audience with some guidance on what was about to happen with the DVD filming. Everyone knew their role and Michael Malone was announced and arrive on stage to a standing ovation.
Michael’s material included stories about his Mom and girlfriend. It was nice to know that both were in the audience and laughing too!
It was a great event and also the first event that included the use of our completed marquee.
Please follow Michael’s career and buy his DVD filmed right here in Shelbyville. The anticipated release date is March 15, 2012.
Below are pictures from the evening:

On Saturday February 11, 2012 the Strand anticipated a sell-out. We were without two of our sound engineers. Strand Board Members Ron Bush and Cody Veerkamp were lending their talents to the Shelbyville High School Choral Department. They ran sound for the Shelbyville High School Singing Spectacular show choir competition.
The day consisted of sixteen show choirs from across the state competing with their performance on the J.W.O. Breck Auditorium stage. The Strand is thrilled to be a small part of any live entertainment in our County. Congratulations to Mr. Joel Kenemore and the wonderful volunteers of the Shelbyville High School Choral Boosters for an outstanding event. (and yes, the Strand did OK without Ron & Cody)

The Strand will be represented on field at the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. One of our volunteers plays in the Indiana University Marching Hundred. The Hundred was invited to perform at the Super Bowl pregame.
The band normally performs only in the fall. They reformed and rehearsed for this performance. Below is a picture of the Hundred during a rehearsal at Indiana University’s Mellenkamp Football Pavilion. Look for the band during the pregame festivities and know the Strand is well represented!

On Friday February 3, 2012 the 340 light bulbs in the Strand Theatre Marquee were lit for the first time in over 30 years. All the sockets and wiring are new and should provide years of service. Upon completion of this section of the project we will now be able to install the panels on the front of the marquee.
Thank you to Steve Dennis and Darin McIntire of Steve Dennis Electric for the expert installation and Dr. Paul Inlow for donating the light bulbs and sockets.
