Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at the Strand!
We are looking forward to a relaxing Thanksgiving Day. This week the Strand received its holiday make-over. The inside is festoon with holiday flare. The outside is equally prepared. Lights, Trees, Garland, Ribbon…all help set the stage for our Holiday fair.
This Friday, November 25, 2011 the Strand will show the very funny movie ELF – starring Will Ferrell. This is show FREE through the generosity of Shelby County Bank. SCB is the Strand’s financial partner, and much of our success can be attributed to their faith in our project. There are two showings: Noon & 6:30pm. Come enjoy this fun movie with your family. No tickets are required and there is no cost for admission.
On Saturday the fun continues with the Strand provided all day entertainment, again at no cost for admission. We have 4 movies on the bill for this Saturday November 26, 2011. We start things off with the Abbott & Costello classic “Jack and the Beanstalk” at 1:00pm. At 3:00pm the MGM musical “Till the Clouds Roll By” will be shown. This chronicles the life of Jerome Kern. The movie if full of large production numbers and the wonderful music of Mr. Kern. We then will show the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movie “The Road to Bali” at 5:00pm. We will finish with a 7:00pm showing for the 1971 classic “Lady Frankenstein.” 4 movies all for free. Come spend the day at the Strand.
There has been work continuing at the Strand. We have been on a quest to find the source of sewer gas that every so often wafts through the building. After much searching we found the culprit. The floor drain in the men’s restroom became dry. A little bit of water filled the trap and problem solved. We won’t let that one happen again!
The Strand now has new chains for our balcony when it is closed. This is something we have needed since we opened. With 170 seats downstairs, there are several events that prefer to keep the audience more intimate and all together. We have never had an effective way to close the balcony. It is also important for safety when the theatre is not is use. We have rehearsals, meetings and other types of things that are not appropriate for the balcony. This helps us keep our users safe.
We are preparing our work list for our break over the holidays. We have painting, patching and cleaning on the agenda. There is a large chunk of dry wall that will be removed from behind the sound booth so we can install CD racks. We also will be fishing a few more wires from the projection booth to the sound booth. (warning, tech talk ahead) This week a DMX cable was installed. More and more we are using DMX control systems for a variety of lights, especially for rock concerts. Strand board member Cody V. is very good with the programming and integration of these devices. If you were at the Band X & Nuff Said concert you saw some of Cody’s handiwork. It will be over the top for Rockphoria. This cable helps connect things together.
After our free movie weekend the Shelby County Players load in their upcoming production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. This is a great family holiday show. We hope you plan on seeing these talented actors once again on the Strand stage.
We have a lot to be thankful for. So far in 2011 we have hosted 9876 audience members. This weekend we will pass the 10,000 mark for the first time in a single season. We are also thankful for your support and encouragement. The Strand is a fun place. See you at the Strand!
