Strand Theatre Weekly Email: May 27, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

The Strand was rockin’ on Saturday night.    Over 200 people attended hearing young musicians from our county hone their craft.   It was a fun night for all involved.   We had the last round of Shelby Idol tryouts this week to.   There are over 30 contestants for this years event.

Don’t forget our Friday Night Frights this Friday May 27th!

From time to time we step back and take a look at how we are doing.  This is an important part in any organization, and vital to the Strand.   Just because those involved think we are busy, we need to make sure that indeed we are making gains.  The Strand’s plan from day one has been slow steady growth.  As we finish the second quarter of 2011, we are pleased to share our current and historical audience figures with everyone.   This is a bit dry, but really interesting to us:

April Monthly Audience Attendance

April 2008    310
April 2009    499
April 2010    763
April 2011    1401

That is a steady increase,   Our total audience so far in 2011 is 4027.   Our total audience since opening is 28,906.    We are a mere 1100 from the 30,000 audience mark.   Each and every performance we broaden our base of first timers to the Strand.

April 2011 was our second best month ever.  The best being December 2010 with a total of 1800.   Last December we had two very large shows that boosted the total.

As we stand today, here is how May looks:

May 2008    993
May 2009    645
May 2010    597
May 2011    783 (+1 to go)

Here are the performance totals as of June 1 each year since we opened

2008    21
2009    43
2010    45
2011    43

So now you know.   The Strand is looking forward to a fun and entertaining summer.   As we approach this Memorial Day, please take some time to visit our web site and view the Veteran’s Documentary on the VIDEO tab of the web site.   This will give you a connection with the local men and women who served in our armed forces.   As we remember our fallen soldiers this Memorial Day, the Strand is humbled by their service.   The Strand Theatre has been a fixture in downtown Shelbyville though WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War and the current and past Gulf conflicts.   Our audiences have spoken live with our soldiers in Iraq, and we have had patriotic concerts, cantatas and war films including PATTON.    Thank you veterans.

Thank YOU for your support.   The Strand is not always easy, but it IS fun.    See you at the Strand!

Strand Theatre Weekly Email: May 20, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

This Saturday night the Strand welcomes two young bands to perform.   The Purple Peanut Armada will perform at 8:00pm.   This is a great opportunity to hear young rock musicians in our community.   We look forward to hearing their music.

Shelby Idol tryouts were at the Strand this past week.   The field of contestants is getting full.   There will be one last chance to audition.  The final preliminary tryouts will be held this coming Wednesday May 25th.   This is a closed audition for the opportunity to compete in Shelby Idol 2011.

This week the Strand welcomed the Shelbyville Middle School Music Department.   The SMS Jazz Choir and Jazz Band performed to a full house on Thursday night.   The choir, under the talented direction of Myra Crosby, sang beautifully.   The students sang without any microphones or amplification.   They could be heard easily even in the upper balcony.   There were also soloists from the ensemble that sang.    The Strand salutes these young musicians who stand on our stage in front of hundreds of people, without the aid of a microphone, and sing a solo.   They all did a great job!

The SMS Jazz Band, under the direction of Adam Kruse, opened and closed the concert.   They were joined by professional musicians Bob Urbani and Tom Gustin.   The performance by these two musicians and educators was made possible by a grant from the Blue River Community Foundation.   The students did an excellent job of filling the Strand with big band music.   It was obvious that the kids were having fun playing.   It is a direct reflection on their director, Mr. Kruse, who had fun too.   The Strand would like to wish Adam and his wife Michaela the best of luck.   Both have been Strand supporters and frequent performers.   Adam has been accepted in the doctoral program and Michigan State University.   He will be moving to East Lansing to pursue is doctorate in music education.    It is because of people like Adam and Michaela the Strand has been able to flourish.   Thank you.

Our web site had a little problem this week.  (Warning, geek tech talk ahead).   It appears that our site, which resides for free on the servers of the Automotive Parts Network, had a problem with a few files.   The session tables became corrupt.  Even though the site was accessible, the data couldn’t be linked with the user session.  The only thing any user would see was our static banner at the top of the page.   This could be a major issue for a web site.   Fortunately for the Strand, our site is professionally maintained by the Automotive Parts Network’s web developer Shane Killgore.   Shane is located in Sacramento California, but continually makes sure our site, along with all the others on the server, are in tip top shape.   When the problem was discovered, Shane had us up and going in minutes.   We did not have to use our backups, but it is nice to know they are there just in case.   Thank you to the Automotive Parts Network at www.iNeedParts.com for the donation of this site and its maintenance.

Friday Night Frights will be this coming Friday May 27, 2011.   This month’s movies are The Terror (1963) starring Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson.   The second feature is the 1973 classic Sisters of Death.   Come to the Strand for a double feature, sit in the balcony and have some great Strand popcorn.   If you are really adventuresome, you can spent Saturday night with our friends at the Skyline Drive-in for their TRIPLE feature!    You could do 5 movies in not much more than one day.   So far we don’t have anything booked for the fourth Friday in June, so we will again have our Friday Night Frights.

If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know.  Rhonda Schegman our volunteer coordinator can be contacted via email at the bottom of this letter.   We have a great time at the Strand and would love to have you as part of our crew.

Thank you for your support and kind words.   We are not in a sprint, but in a long distance race.   We have just gotten started, and we have lots of exciting things planned for the future.   We are honored that you are a part of the future of the Strand Theatre.   See you at the Strand!

SMS Jazz Choir & Band: May 19, 2011

Published by under News

On May 19, 2011 the Shelbyville Middle School Jazz Choir and Jazz Band performed their annual concert at the Strand Theatre.   The members of the ensembles gave a great performance.   The band was joined by clinicians and jazz musicians Bob Urbani and Tom Gustin.

The audience was treated with music from the swing era and music of today.   The choir is under the direction of Myra Crosby.   The band was conducted by Adam Kruse.

This was Mr. Kruse’s last concert for the SMS Band program.    A frequent Strand performer with his group “The Complete Unknowns”, the Strand Family wishes him the best of luck as he completes his doctorate in music at Michigan State University.
