Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 28, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

The Strand was been quite a bevy of activity.   Our volunteers have worked overtime making sure everything runs smoothly.   Many parts of the theatre are also doing overtime work.   The past few weeks our roof is at the top of that list.

Last fall during the drought, the Strand did some much needed roof repair with the help of the Blue River Foundation.  No one tends to think about a leaky roof in the middle of months of dry weather, but we do.   R. D. Marshall construction not only repaired the roof, but also the parapet caps and the flashing on the peaked part of the roof over the stage.   This week especially, we feel this is a good thing.  The Strand has been bone dry throughout this rainy weather.    Jim Marshall told us this roof would hold us for about 7 years.   We are already planning what to do next.  The distant future is never as far off as one thinks.    So far so good.

Our first in the 2011 Strand Lecture was on Autism.  This is a topic that touches many families in Shelby County.   Thank you to Dana Renay and the Autism Society of America / Indiana for presenting at this informative event.   The lecture was followed by an interesting question and answer session.   This is the type of lecture the Strand is proud to be able to provide to our community.

Friday Night Frights were scary.   We are checking our May schedule to see if we have any live events on the fourth Friday.   If not, we will be back with another Horror Double Feature.   These are fun.   We have audience members from all across Central Indiana travel to the Strand for these classics on the big screen.   We enjoy talking to everyone and are even happier to learn the great dinners they have at our local restaurants.   We start these films at 8:00pm specifically to give people time to go out and eat before the show.

Retro Bill made a return visit to the Strand this week.   300+ of his fans packed the theatre to hear his inspiring message.   This is an event sponsored by D.A.R.E. from the Shelbyville Police Department.   Officer Floyd Hastings does an amazing job arranging this extremely well attended event.  We had about 60 pounds of popcorn on hand for the event.   We ran out!!   That is a lot of popcorn.  The best part of the evening is that we are able to witness the kid’s respect and admiration for their friend Officer Hastings.   He is a shining star in our community.   Thank you Officer Hastings.

Coming up on Friday is the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition’s Talent Show.   This event, produced by their Youth Council will include many talented young musicians.   The entertainment starts at 7:00pm.

On Monday May 2, 2011 the Waldron High School Band performs a concert starting at 7:00pm.   To end the week we have the Shelbyville High School Jazz Band performing on Friday May 6th at 7:30pm.    Come support all these student musicians as they gain their performing chops at the Strand.

Don’t forget to attend the 89th Annual May Festival at Shelbyville High School on May 5th.

Thank you for all the support.  The Strand has been a breath of fresh air in the lives of all our volunteers and board members.   We are honored to be a part of this project.   See you at the Strand!

Autism Lecture: April 20, 2011

Published by under News

Dana Renay AutismThe Strand presented the first lecture of the 2011 series on April 20, 2011.   The topic for this lecture was Autism.   We were fortunate to be able to present Dana Renay, Executive Director of the Autism Society of America / Indiana.

After the formal lecture a very informative question and answer session was held.   Families effected who have members effected by the disease weree able to get much needed answers to lingering question.

Many times the local school system is involved with autistic children.  The Director of Special Education for Shelbyville Central Schools was in attendance to lend support and answers for the SCS perspective.

The Strand thanks the Autism Society for presenting this lecture on this most important topic.

Shelby County Players Announces Auditions for

You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown

Directed by Lora Norris

Produced by J. Alyn Hurst and Holly Collett

Choreographed by Jill Evans

Musical Direction by Cynthia Morningstar

Auditions for You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown will take place on May 10th and 11th, 2011 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Strand Theatre, located at 215 South Harrison Street Shelbyville, Indiana.

Casting needs for the show are four men, four women, and chorus members. Actors will be asked to prepare 16 measures of music for the audition, and may bring either sheet music or an accompaniment CD. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing and come prepared to dance. Actors will also be asked to read from the script and sing from the libretto.

You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown tells the story of an average day in the life of the famous comic strip child hero, Charlie Brown. It is a day made up of little moments picked from all the days of Charlie Brown, from Valentine’s Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of his friends (both human and non-human) and strung together on the string of a single day, from bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit evening. Most of the characters are 5-6 years old; however the show is generally cast with adults.

The show will be performed at the Strand Theatre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 28, 29, 30 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, July 31 at 2:00pm, 2011. For more information visit the Shelby County Players website at http://www.shelbycountyplayers.com/

Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 15, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

The Shelby County Players present “Picnic” this weekend at the Strand.   You will want to see this production.   The Strand is a theatre with a very tall ceiling.  The scenery for this production takes full advantage of the height that the Strand has to offer.   The director, stage manager, designers, technicians and actors have worked very hard to have this play ready to go.   It is a fantastic script and is sure to be well executed.   We hope to see you at one of the three performances.

The first lecture of the 2011 Lecture Series takes place on Wednesday April 20, 2011.   AUTISM is the subject and it will be presented by Dana Renay from the Autism Society of America / Indiana.  This FREE lecture will be interesting and relevant.

This past week the Strand has been effected by far away places such as Phuket, Thailand; Penang, Malaysia and Anuradhapura Sri Lanka.   In Malaysia the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) has made statements that go the the heart of the matter effecting the Strand.  FAMA is revaluating their import quotes on coconuts.   Coconuts to the Malaysian people are like soy beans to us.   FAMA is increasing the quotes do to a severe shortage.   Could you ever imagine our Indiana department of agriculture talking about importing soy beans from a foreign country for our consumption?    The problem is not just in Malaysia.   The drought in that area of the world has effected coconut crops in other countries too.  In Thailand, they are also fighting the Brontispa Longissima which is known as a coconut hispine beetle.   This little bug is ravaging their coconut crop.   We thought we had problems with our ash trees.   We will have to ask Scott Gabbard about that.

So how do these events half a world away effect the Strand?  The Strand popcorn is known for being outstanding.  We use Indiana grown popcorn and the best of ingredients.  This includes using 100% Coconut Oil.   We receive this in a 5 gallon pale.   Below 72° it is solid, above that temperature it becomes liquid.   We had to buy more oil this week.   We have paid around $60 for a pail of oil.  When we received our new supply this week, the price had jumped to over $90.   This was in just a few weeks.  We had sticker shock.   It turns out that the world wide decrease in the availability of coconuts has hit the Strand in the pocketbook.  The forces of supply and demand are at work.  So now you know.  We were told by our excellent supplier to brace ourselves because they expect the price to increase to over $100.   The best solution for the Strand is to sell more popcorn!  Next time you visit, buy a $3 bucket of fresh popped popcorn.

The Strand had a first this week, unfortunately it is not a very good first.   After doing our trash talk last week, our volunteers noticed that someone took one of our 95 gallon trash bins provided by CGS.   This is the first theft against the Strand.   We called the Shelbyville Police Department. Officer (and Strand Fan) Mike Shaw came over in the pouring rain and took the report.   The trash bin is green with the CGS logo.  The serial number is 0001993.   If you see it, please give our friends at the Shelbyville Police Department a call.   We are very sad that this happened.

Public safety was a frequent guest at the Strand this week.  Every year the Strand receives an inspection from the Shelbyville Fire Department.   Robbie S. came and gave us this year’s inspection.   This is always a good thing for the Strand.   We see what has gone right, and what needs improvement.   The inspection was on Monday, and by the time you are in the theatre on Friday all the items we needed to fix will be accomplished.   Among the punch list was adding a fire strobe and horn in the dressing room under the stage.  That used to be an old dingy mechanical room.  This is one of those things we just never thought about.   The new unit is in place.  It is shiny, new, bright and LOUD.    We test our fire system once a month.  Any time we have a group of actors in, we always give training and pull the fire alarm.  The Shelby County Players received the training this week.  They will tell you when the fire alarm is sounding, there is no doubt.

As you know, we talk about everything.  We have no secrets.  We tell the good, the not so good and the unusual.   We don’t know where this falls, but we made a discovery this week.  While this might not seem important, to those volunteers who clean the theatre over 125 times per year, it is a big deal.  Our faithful vacuum cleaner had a problem. (warning, tech talk ahead)  We checked out the vacuum cleaner.  The belt was fine – it wasn’t the problem.  However, the motor brushes were hanging up and not making good contact, which lead to the motor acting erratically.  We were able to fix that problem, and the motor works just fine now. The cleaner is usable, and is back at the theatre.

Now, we’ve always had a problem with dirt collecting in the outer bag, and assumed that it was due to improper installation of the paper bags.  However, that was not the problem.  We discovered that the tube, which leads into the cloth bag, where the paper bags attach, had been damaged – holes burned in it!!  Possibly from picking up hot butts or ashes which probably happened before we ever had custody of the cleaner.  Consequently, we need to replace the cloth bag & assembly.  It’s a commercial grade cleaner, and is worth fixing.   We will fix it.  It was one of the many donations we received when we re-opened.

The best part about the Strand is you.  We enjoy seeing everyone in the audience and around town.   Thank you for the support.   Each and every volunteer at the Strand does it for the love of the project and the dedication to our mission.   See you at the Strand.

Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 8, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

The music was flowing this week at the Strand.   We had two excellent concerts this past weekend.  On Friday night was Cobbler Gobblers.   The music by Kent Lockman and his group filled the theatre with a full and rich sound.  It was followed on Sunday by a wonderful performance by the Shelby Community Band.   The band was joined by a Brass Sextet from Tipton Indiana “The Brassworks”.   They put on quite a show.   Alto Flugelhorn player and arranger Charlie Rose provided several arrangements for the Brassworks.  The Shelby Community Band played one of Charlie’s marches in their portion of the program too!   Between the two concerts the Strand had over 300 people hear live music this past weekend.
The Shelby County Players are working hard to prepare their production of PICNIC scheduled for next week at the Strand.   This week they rehearsed two nights at the Strand.   Since all their rehearsals take place off site, this time is valuable in allowing the actors to acclimate to our stage.    They had a tough time squeezing in between our events, but they were able to have some valuable stage time.

The event in the middle of the week was our annual April Poetry Night.   Carolyn, Mary Kay and Barbara from Three Sisters Books and Gifts once again arranged an entertaining evening of poetry.   This year the Restoration Press brought 4 poets to share some of their works.   This is always fun.   Poetry will return in October.  If you haven’t had the chance to experience an evening of poetry, please try to make it.   You will be glad you did.

Once again this week Blue River Printing came to the rescue of the Strand.   We have several volunteers that do different jobs.   Usually one person submits our material to be printed.   This week when another volunteer went to pick up some tickets, we found out that the final proof had not been approved.   No sooner did we say OK, then Bryan and his group had the job printed.   Once again, we don’t quite get things done as we like, but Blue River Printing keeps us on track.  The Strand appreciates the whole crew at BRP for helping us help ourselves!
Notice the wind this week?  We didn’t.  That is because the exterior of the Strand is completely secure after our facade fix last year.   It is hard to believe that a year has gone by since Jim Marshall and John Huber came to the rescue.   Now everything is secure and a little wind doesn’t bother us.

This weekend the Strand is helping raise funds for SCUFFY.  Join us on Friday night for the movie “Major League”.  You will have fun and help SCUFFY at the same time!   The show starts at 7:00pm on Saturday April 9, 2011.   Immediately after the event, the Shelby County Players move in for their play PICNIC.  It will be a busy week.

Thank you for all your support.  This week, we again, received unsolicited donations in the mail.   Not only that, but people have been very generous dropping a few extra dollars in our Donation Drum in the lobby.   Thank you for the support.   We hope to see you soon at the Strand.
