Strand Stained Glass

When the Strand was being renovated, Tim Conway of Shelbyville, donated  a piece stained glass he created.  The glass depicts the Greek masks of Comedy and Tragedy.   This work of art is very appropriate for our old theatre that has been transformed into a vibrant performing arts center.

Up to now, the glass has been in our lobby without lighting.  This past week Strand volunteers installed backlight for this piece of art.   As you pass by the lobby you can see the stained glass lit above the ticket booth.

Strand Theatre Weekly Email: March 24, 2011

Published by under Weekly Emails

The Strand has had a quite week.   You might remember that last week we sold out for the Triton Central High School production of Our Town.   We were able to catch our breath this week.   Volunteers were busy finishing all sorts of odd jobs.
It is hard to believe, but the warm weather is just around the corner.  It is time to check out our air conditioning units.   The Strand runs on 4 different units on both the east and west side of our roof.   (Warning, tech talk ahead)  Apparently the sealer that was put into the Stage South Unit last August did the trick.  That unit needed no additional freon at this time.  Stage North took on a couple of pounds, which is normal for a unit of that age, and the balcony units needed no additional freon (R22).  So, all in all, the units are in good shape, and we have an ample supply of R22 for use in the future.  The amp draws looked good, so we don’t foresee any compressors burning out, etc., at this time.  It’s a good thing.

We always try to keep the Strand clean.   That is a good thing too, since last week we received a visit from the Shelby County Health Department.   We are inspected several times per year.   Since we are all volunteer and only open for performances, we unfortunately always take a few minutes of their weekends.   The Strand passed.   We are doing everything that is required.  The SCHD also gave us some excellent suggestions to even make what we do better.   We have implemented those suggestions and posted our fashionable lime green permit on the wall.

We are going to try to do something new with these emails.   In addition to writing about our events, we will put a standardized list of events at the end of every email.  This list will be easily copied if you would like to post the Strand events on your site, newsletters, signs or anywhere else.   We have some surprises up our sleeve, so this is one of those necessary steps to get to a broader goal…more about that later.

This weekend we have the return of Friday Night Frights.    There will be two horror movies on tap.   If you like the genre, you will enjoy this weekend.  The double feature starts at 8:00pm on Friday March 25th.   This is part of our 4th Friday schedule.

Next week we will have Kent Lockman and the Cobbler Gobblers on the Strand stage for a concert.   This talented group plays self described “mountain music”.   They are a treat to hear.   Come join us on April Fools Day Night for a wonderful concert by our local talent.   All you Hendricks Elementary alumni, students, parents and grandparent, this is indeed Mr. & Mrs. Lockman who teach at your school.   You will have a great time.

Loper School had a wonderful production of ANNIE (jr. version) this week.   Funded by a grant from our friends at the Blue River Community Foundation, this featured Loper Elementary students.    Frances Jackson, Meredith Hall, Jan Asher and Eric Sutton did a great job of preparing the students for this musical.   There were many future Strand performers on their stage!   We extend congratulations to the students and teachers on a successful production.

Thank you for all your support.   The Strand is a labor of love for many people.   Our performers, volunteers and Board thank you for the support.    Almost every week we receive an unsolicited donation in the mail.   It is truly heartwarming to know that so many people care.    We look forward to seeing you at the Strand!     Now for the list….

Strand Theatre to Host “Major League” Fundraiser for SCUFFY

Published by under Events

April 9, 2011
6:00 pm

The Strand Theatre is pleased to announce the sponsorship of a new fundraiser for SCUFFY this year.  To celebrate the start of the 2011 baseball season we are showing the hit comedy Major League starring Corbin Bernsen, Tom Berenger and the one and only Charlie Sheen.  Of course who can forget Bob Ueker as the Indians announcer.

To enhance the experience, ballpark food will be sold prior to and during the movie.  We have a hot dog vendor, popcorn, beer and soda.  Patrons are encouraged  to come dressed in their favorite team’s attire.

Tickets are $10 with a portion of  the proceeds being donated to Scuffy.

Come out for a fun time and support Scuffy.

Doors open at 6 and the movie starts at 7.

Tickets are available at Mickeys T Mart and at the door.
