October was a flurry of activity for the Strand. The theatre had 25 different events. (warning, fourth grade math problem ahead) For every performance on average our volunteers spend 2-1/2 hours before the show and 1 hour clean-up after. It takes a minimum of 4 volunteers for each show. 3.5 x 4 = 14 labor hours x 25 shows = 275 hours. Most shows last 2 hours. Add an additional 50 hours and our grand total was 325 volunteer hours just to run the October schedule! We had dozens of people help. It is always fun!
No more math today, but a little about our popcorn popper. In order to install the new unit (warning, tech talk ahead) we need to install a 50 amp 240 volt line. The only place to access this type of power is our new 400A service panels on the west stage wall. The popcorn popper is on the east facade wall. There is about 160 feet of cable needed between the two. The path is not easy, through the tunnel, up a balcony post, across the inside of the balcony, over the lobby, down the wall to grandmother’s house we go. It is scheduled for completion this week. Until then, Studio 10 is still helping us out with popcorn for our events. Thank you Studio 10!!
We have had several wonderful performances so far in November. The New Life United Methodist Church, the Shelby County Ministerial Association, and this past weekend over 200 patrons attended the Snowflake Princess Coronation by Kappa Delta Phi. These have been fun and worthwhile events.
We still have a full schedule. This coming weekend we have two great bands performing. Band X with the multi-talented Nuff Said will take the Strand stage at 7:30 pm on Saturday November 20th. This will be a great concert for the family. The Strand is an excellent venue to help expose young people to live Rock & Roll.
Sunday Waldron High School Performing Arts will present their fall musical “Quilters.” You won’t want to miss these talented high school students.
FREE HOLIDAY MOVIE – ELF
This year Shelby County Bank once again is sponsoring a FREE HOLIDAY MOVIE for our community. This year the Strand will be showing ELF, starring Will Ferrell, on Friday November 26th. Showtimes are Noon and 6:30pm. This is FREE OF CHARGE for anyone wishing to attend. Seating will be limited to the first 350 patrons. Bring the family to see this very funny holiday movie. Thank you to Shelby County Bank for once again making it possible for our community to be able to experience a holiday film in the Strand. Sitting in the balcony with your family builds a memory that will last a lifetime.
The next few weeks will be hectic. After the Waldron High School Musical we will be decorating the Strand for the Holiday Season. Anyone wishing to help, please contact Rhonda Schwegman. We have only three days to get this task accomplished, so the more help the better.
One of the father’s from the the Snowflake Princess Coronation took the time to contact us saying “Thank you for all the work you have coordinated.” This is what we do, not only having the venue for use, but helping make sure everything goes smoothly.
Thank you for supporting the Strand. We are thrilled each and every week to see new faces and returning friends walk into the auditorium. Without your support and encouragement, all this would not be possible. We hope to see you this Holiday Season at the Strand!
