Strand Theatre Weekly Email: April 22, 2010

Published by under Weekly Emails

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to get work done when you are busy?   The Strand is no exception.  We have plenty of projects, but we are busy with shows.   That is an excellent problem to have.    Speaking of problems, we got ready to host the talent show last Friday and we ran out of Cherry Coke.   We called our friends at Cagney’s and asked if they had a box to spare.  They did, and we walked over and got it in time for our show.   This week we asked for the invoice…we were told they donated it to our cause.   Thank you Cagney’s.

Tuesday night the second lecture in the 2010 Strand Lecture Series was on astronomy.  The presenter, Jeff Patterson of the Indiana Astronomical Society, gave an excellent talk.    Thank you Jeff for sharing your knowledge and passion for the stars with us.    For those of you in attendance, you might have recognized the music before and after the show.   It was the orchestral suite “The Planets” by Gustav Holst.   We thought it would be fitting.

We continue to do various jobs for our pipe organ project.   This week a console platform was constructed for the Oak Theatre console we just acquired.  On Sunday May 16th we will be showing a great MGM Musical “Till the Clouds Roll By.”   This is all music of Jerome Kern.   For that showing we will have all three Louisville Pipe Organ Company’s consoles in the cabaret area.  You will be able to see the consoles from the Oak Theatre, Louisville; the Oriental Theatre, Indianapolis and the console that will be installed in the Strand from the Uptown Theatre, Louisville.   It will be a real treat to see these together at one time.   The movie is fantastic too.   It has many of the stars of the day including Judy Garland, June Allison and Frank Sinatra.

On Wednesday night this week the Shelbyville High School Band held their concert at Breck Auditorium.   They had a wonderful art show in the lobby before and after the performance.   Also before the concert, the Veteran’s Tribute videos were shown.  This project was done by the Music Department of SHS in partnership with the Strand.   This was funded by an Indiana Arts Commission Grant.   The Strand is proud to be a partner in this project based learning endeavor.   You might have heard about the 21st Century Learning Initiative.   The Strand and SHS Music Department have completed our project using that educational model.   All the videos are available online on our web site.   We will showing them again and often at the Strand.   The concert was great too!  Congratulations to the Class of 2010 Seniors.  They we honored at the concert.  These are the same students that as sophomores helped on those cold December weekends to get the Strand ready to open.   Good Luck Seniors!

There is also a schedule change for May 8th.   The Shelbyville High School Jazz Band concert will start at 7:30pm.   This is 1/2 hour later than scheduled.   The reason is that the Shelbyville High School Fine Arts Academic Team has placed 3rd in the State.   They will be at Purdue University on May 8th competing for the championship.   Many of the team members are in the Jazz Band, and the team sponsor Russell Smith is the band director.   We wish the Academic Team good luck in the State Competition!

This week we are busy.   There is something for everyone.    We hope to see you at the theatre soon.  Thank you for your support.

I sit in my room, guitar in hand. I clear my mind. Then they come; Room Songs, (unrequested inspiration), suddenly springing forth to reveal all my inner secrets. They won’t stop, nor will they ever. My tears, fears and laughter pouring out to reveal who I have been, who I am now, but never who I will be………… These are my room songs. They are Ray Reisinger.

Strand Theatre Lecture Series: Number 2

Published by under News

On Tuesday April 20, 2010 the Strand Theatre hosted the second lecture in its annual lecture series.    Wonders of the Indiana Sky was presented by Jeff Patterson.    Mr. Patterson is president of the Indiana Astronomical Society.   He discussed what we see when we look up.    The images from his presentation were especially beautiful on the Strand’s screen.

An extended question and answer session followed the lecture.  Mr. Patterson brought a metiorite that originally fell in Odessa, Texas.   He stated that the metiorite was over 55,000 years old.

There are excellent reference materials on the IAS web site.   Visit them at www.iasindy.org
