Now you might think that there are some really different films in this list, you would be correct. The Strand is working on finding the perfect blend of movies. Next month we are hopefully starting our partnership with another theatre that will allow us to bring more recognizable films to the Strand. The key is keeping our costs in line. This month is something completely different. You would have to go to New York, L.A. or Chicago to find this variety. These are all outstanding films. Because you might not know much about them, this week we will take a little time to clue you in.

Let’s start with Slacker Uprising. This is a Michael Moore documentary that deals with the director’s observations as he embarked on a 60 campus college tour during our last presidential election. The next is The Bride of Dracula. This stars Peter Cushing. This is one of a series of Dracula movies made by Cushing. You might remember him from Star Wars, he had the stench Princess Lea found so offensive. We round out the first weekend with Carry On…Up the Kyhber. This is a British comedy that consistently rates high on funny film lists. It will be a treat to see on the big screen.

The second weekend in September starts with the film Orpheus. The French film is a classic from 1950. The story is well known and the film is on most film buffs must see list. Saturday night we show The Evil of Frankenstein. Another Peter Cushing horror classic. We round out the weekend with the hilarious Divorce Italian Style. This movie won the Academy Award for best comedy writing. It also had Best Supporting Actor and Best Director nominations. It stars Marcello Mastrioanni.

The third weekend brings us to the most diverse offering of the month. We start out on Friday night with the Serge Einstein classic Alexander Nevsky. Einstein was a major player in Russian art and film. Many of us had to study his work in college. This film was scored by the famed Russian composer Serge Prokofiev. The film will be presented in Russian with English subtitles. Saturday we leap…and I mean leap, to the Legend of Sandsquatch. Just read the title and come up with your own conclusion. This film is going to be a late night classic, we are just ahead of the game showing it only 3 years after its release. The final film needs no explanation: Ma & Pa Kettle at the Fair.
As you can see, the Strand Film School is open for business the month of September. But wait…there’s more! We have a whole weekend of B Movies the final weekend of the month as we are a host site for the B-Movie Celebration.

You will also notice that we are trying different starting times. This coming month the Sunday movies will be at 5:00pm. We’ll see if this helps.

Don’t worry, we have a great variety of live entertainment planned for the month too. We’ll write about that next week. Thank you for the support. While you plan your weekend activities, don’t forget to visit our friends at the Blue River Festival in downtown Shelbyville starting on Friday. Our late night movie on Saturday night is the Alfred Hitchcock classic PSYCHO! We hope to see you there.

Thank you for the support. As we try new things, some things work, some don’t. There is a common thread throughout them all, we are doing our mission and having fun in the process. We truly look forward to seeing you at the theatre.
