Another week has come and gone. The Strand has done so many things it is hard to tell whether we are coming or going! Last weekend the Strand hosted 4 events in 3 days. Danny Russel on Friday and Wilderness Plots on Saturday were both excellent programs. Congratulations to the cast of Wilderness Plots, their documentary has been nominated for an Emmy Award. It is not too often we get an Emmy nominee at our theatre to perform. Tim Grimm, the principle of the group, will tentatively be returning to the Strand in February 2010 with his “Hoosier Dylan” show. This will feature music of Bob Dylan. They will be joined on stage by Shelbyville’s own “The Complete Unknowns“. As you recall they too perform music of Dylan and had a concert at the Strand this past February.
Let’s see…what’s going on? The answer to that question would be…lots. The work in the offices is still progressing. We are removing all the ceiling plaster to insulate and re-wire. When finished, each office will have a matching brass chandelier. The roof is getting ready to have a few repairs. Bob S. took a look, and there is one area that we need to patch. The roof over the stage area needs major help. This is beyond the ability (and safety) of our volunteers. We are saving our pennies to be able to afford this work. The marquee is slowly creeping forward. Our material will be ready soon, then off to be formed and painted before we can install it.
Do you forward or print these emails for other people? We can send them their very own copy. Just reply to this email and let us know the name and email address of the person you wish to add. Just this week we have several new Strand Fans joining the list. A big hello to our friends at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. As many times as we have mentioned them here, they weren’t on the weekly list. Amanda, Christina and Julie help us in many ways. We appreciate all they do. Others we need to say hello to are our out-of-town readers. Matthew D. follows us through the emails and our friends from Broad Ripple get their updates via the RSS feed from the web site. It is nice to know that we have a reach beyond our own borders.
Have you been to a movie yet at the Strand? It is fun. We have a small but growing following for our movie offerings. This week we have “Risen” at 11:00pm on Saturday night. On Sunday at 6:00pm we have some local bands performing on the Strand stage. This includes Future Nature, Men Working in Trees, and Saving the Martyr. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
Don’t forget that on June 27th ShelbyIdol returns. This year we expect a full theatre, so get your tickets early!
The Strand is a wonderful thing for our community. Your support is the cornerstone of the project. Thank You! See you at the theatre.

On June 13, 2009 the Strand welcomed a talented group of musicians that performed “Wilderness Plots.” Based on a book written by Scott Russell Sanders, the evening was filled with storytelling and music.

The Strand helped host the 2009 Genealogical Society Convention – GenFest. We provided entertainment that was suited to the attendees on both Friday and Saturday night. The registration was the event was in the Strand Cabaret area. During the registration hours, there were images of old Shelbyville and Shelby County projected on our screen. Included in these images was a commercial from 1925 for the Chambers ovens. Also included was a 1937 look at every day life in Shelbyville filmed by “Doc” Barnett.
Below Strand Volunteers Janet W., Elizabeth F., Rhonda S. and Debbie E. take a break during the tour at Forrest Hill Cemetery. This tour was one of the many activities provided for the GenFest event.
