Strand Theatre Weekly Email: May 20, 2009

Published by under Weekly Emails

This week is another flurry of activity for the Strand and our volunteers.   First let’s talk about what’s happening at the theatre.   On Wednesday (that’s tonight!) the Judy Garland film “Till the Clouds Roll By” is playing at 7:00 pm.  This is a biographical look at the life and music of Jerome Kern.   This should be a real treat.

On Thursday we have the Shelbyville Middle School Music Department performing their Jazz Showcase.  This will feature the SMS Jazz Band and the SMS Jazz Choir.   Please support these young musicians as they gain experience on our stage.  I am sure it will be a fun evening of music.

On Friday we will show “Caddyshack” (Rated R) at 7:30 pm.   This is a funny movie.  We will be selling Baby Ruth Candy Bars at the ticket counter for only $1 when you buy your ticket.  For those of you who don’t understand that, come see the movie!

On Saturday we will show our late night cult classic at 11:00pm.  This Saturday will be “Dracula and his Vampire Bride”.   When was the last time you saw that on the big screen?    These late night Saturday movies are fun.

Also on our docket this week is the Volunteer Fair at Girls Inc. on Thursday May 21, 2009. The Strand will have a booth looking to talk to all you potential volunteers.   We, along with 45 of our close friends, will have booths highlighting the volunteer opportunities right here in our County.  So come out and see what tickles your fancy.  Maybe you will decide to help us or one of the many other Not-For-Profit organizations represented.   The Fair will be from 9:00 – 12:00 and again from 4:00 – 7:00.   It will be over just in time to zip back to hear the SMS Jazz Concert!  If you are looking to help, this is a great way to find out.

The Strand organization has had two wonderful additions to our family.   David Phares II has agreed to be our treasurer (yippee!).   He will help guide our ship through the economic waters.   The Strand has been very successful at managing our resources and we look forward to the help and expertise that David brings to the table.

Also this week we have added Inga Crim to our fun bunch to help with marketing.  There are always emails to be sent, posters to be hung and flyers to distribute.  Inga will help us get the word out.   Thank you David and Inga for volunteering for the Strand.

You will notice that work has slowed down on the marquee.   That is in large part to Steve D. taking off for Florida this week.   Have you noticed the weather in Florida?   Serves him right.   He and Ron M. will be back at it next week.  We have some custom angle brackets being fabricated, and the exterior of our marquee will get a new aluminum skin.  Soon you will see Gordon H. installing all those light sockets.

Did you go to Rockphoria…good.  You saw a GREAT show.   The Band, the Singers and the Production were outstanding.  Andy Erickson handled the Master of Ceremonies role for the evening.   We heard many different styles of music.  The nine singers on stage each had solo numbers as well as singing backup vocals on other songs.   Check out the pictures on our website.   Next time let’s sell out the house when Rockphoria returns in the fall.  Thank you to all the volunteer performers for making this such a musical treat.

The Strand is a great place to go, and a great place to be.   We live in a wonderful community full of wonderful and talented people.  Just look at the Strand, it is a testament to that fact!    The management of the physical theatre is puny in comparison to what occurs on our stage.  Please come to one of our events and see the ever immerging talent that we have here amongst us.   Thank you for all your support.

Strand Theatre Weekly Email: May 15, 2009

Published by under Weekly Emails

Now this is what we have been talking about….   This weekend Shelbyville and Shelby County have their choice of live entertainment.  The Strand has always said that if you go see a live performance in our community, you are helping fulfill the mission of the Strand.   This weekend we have quite the choice.   First up is Rockphoria at the Strand.   This Rock n’ Roll Journey will feature 9 different lead singers and a dynamite band.  Keyboard player Dave Rasche has even brought his traveling Leslie speaker cabinet for the occasion.  The stage will be packed with musicians performing some of the greatest Rock n’ Roll songs of all time.   Every song will be familiar.   The concert starts at 8:00pm.  You don’t want to miss this.

In case rock music isn’t your cup of tea, well you are in luck.   The Shelby County Players are performing “The Boys Next Door” three times this weekend at their theatre.   If a live play isn’t in the cards, then you can trot out to Shelbyville High School to hear the Choral Department perform their end of year “Spectacular 2009″ on Saturday night.   If you want some late night rock music, Fat Daddy’s has the band “Smileys” performing on Saturday too.   Maybe you want to gamble (literally), Indiana Live Casino has three acts all playing on Saturday night.  You can hear Sherrie Gold, Duke Tumato or the Jay Baker Band all weekend long at the Casino.

To round out Saturday, the Blue River Folk Music Festival takes place at Town & Country Church.  This features some of the finest folk musicians playing dulcimers, auto harps, fiddles and more!  The Folk Music Festival is an all day event.

Our community is growing.  Our quality of life is improving.  As you can see by the variety offered this weekend, there is something for everyone “Live On Stage in Shelby County!”   I haven’t even talked about the films yet!

If motion pictures are your bag baby, then we have some fun for you.   The Strand will show the 1983 animated classic “Rock & Rule”  Saturday night at 11:00 pm.   This is another in our “late night cult movie” schedule.   On Sunday we have the Abbott and Costello movie Africa Screams” at 1:30.   If you want current run movies, you can catch all the new flicks including the new Star Trek Movie at our friends at Republic Theatre’s Studio 10.   If you want a sit in your car and enjoy the show, visit our friends at the Skyline Drive-In.  They are now open for the season. They will be showing movies all weekend (after dark of course).

We have a choice.  Take advantage of what our community has to offer.  Please attend something this weekend.  We would love to see you at the Strand, but if you want to attend any of the other wonderful offerings, we are glad for that too.

Notice all the changes to our Marquee.   The big guns, Steve D. & Ron M., are in getting the new lights installed and panels ready to fit.   We hauled out a tremendous amount of old wiring from the marquee this week.  Like everything else, it is getting some long overdue TLC.   In addition Steve D. found the original sequencer (warning, tech talk ahead).  This is the unit that caused the light bulbs to chase around the perimeter for the marquee.  This original switching mechanism has a centrifugal cam that engages each contact, one after the other.   We will be posting pictures of this neat gizmo on our web site.   It is being replace by a solid state unit donated by our own Ron B.    Keep looking at the marquee, you will see it change dramatically in the weeks ahead.

The Strand would like to take this opportunity to remember Ruth Marshall who passed away last week.  Mrs. Marshall was a supporter of the Strand and because of people like her, she helped blaze the trail we now take.   She will be missed.

We look forward to seeing you out and about!   Rockphoria Saturday night…it will be great!   Thanks for all your support.
