This week is another flurry of activity for the Strand and our volunteers. First let’s talk about what’s happening at the theatre. On Wednesday (that’s tonight!) the Judy Garland film “Till the Clouds Roll By” is playing at 7:00 pm. This is a biographical look at the life and music of Jerome Kern. This should be a real treat.
On Thursday we have the Shelbyville Middle School Music Department performing their Jazz Showcase. This will feature the SMS Jazz Band and the SMS Jazz Choir. Please support these young musicians as they gain experience on our stage. I am sure it will be a fun evening of music.
On Friday we will show “Caddyshack” (Rated R) at 7:30 pm. This is a funny movie. We will be selling Baby Ruth Candy Bars at the ticket counter for only $1 when you buy your ticket. For those of you who don’t understand that, come see the movie!
On Saturday we will show our late night cult classic at 11:00pm. This Saturday will be “Dracula and his Vampire Bride”. When was the last time you saw that on the big screen? These late night Saturday movies are fun.
Also on our docket this week is the Volunteer Fair at Girls Inc. on Thursday May 21, 2009. The Strand will have a booth looking to talk to all you potential volunteers. We, along with 45 of our close friends, will have booths highlighting the volunteer opportunities right here in our County. So come out and see what tickles your fancy. Maybe you will decide to help us or one of the many other Not-For-Profit organizations represented. The Fair will be from 9:00 – 12:00 and again from 4:00 – 7:00. It will be over just in time to zip back to hear the SMS Jazz Concert! If you are looking to help, this is a great way to find out.
The Strand organization has had two wonderful additions to our family. David Phares II has agreed to be our treasurer (yippee!). He will help guide our ship through the economic waters. The Strand has been very successful at managing our resources and we look forward to the help and expertise that David brings to the table.
Also this week we have added Inga Crim to our fun bunch to help with marketing. There are always emails to be sent, posters to be hung and flyers to distribute. Inga will help us get the word out. Thank you David and Inga for volunteering for the Strand.
You will notice that work has slowed down on the marquee. That is in large part to Steve D. taking off for Florida this week. Have you noticed the weather in Florida? Serves him right. He and Ron M. will be back at it next week. We have some custom angle brackets being fabricated, and the exterior of our marquee will get a new aluminum skin. Soon you will see Gordon H. installing all those light sockets.
Did you go to Rockphoria…good. You saw a GREAT show. The Band, the Singers and the Production were outstanding. Andy Erickson handled the Master of Ceremonies role for the evening. We heard many different styles of music. The nine singers on stage each had solo numbers as well as singing backup vocals on other songs. Check out the pictures on our website. Next time let’s sell out the house when Rockphoria returns in the fall. Thank you to all the volunteer performers for making this such a musical treat.
The Strand is a great place to go, and a great place to be. We live in a wonderful community full of wonderful and talented people. Just look at the Strand, it is a testament to that fact! The management of the physical theatre is puny in comparison to what occurs on our stage. Please come to one of our events and see the ever immerging talent that we have here amongst us. Thank you for all your support.
