The Strand Theatre in conjunction with the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society presented a lecture on the theatre pipe organ. This free lecture highlighted the history and techology of what is a uniquely American Musical art form. There werelots of pictures and plenty of music in this informative lecture.
The evening finished with an update on the Strand Theatre Pipe Organ Project and a lively question and answer session. Along with the lecture, a "petting zoo" of organ parts was located in the cabaret area. Patrons were able to see and play with real theatre pipe organ parts.
The Strand Organ Project is endowed by the Shelby County Historical Society. The next lecture in the Series is Tuesday May 5, 2009 at 7:00pm

David M. Finkel during the question and answer session following the lecture.

This past weekend the Strand hosted a great show. Adam and Amanda O’Connor played a return engagement, and the group The Complete Unknowns filled out the bill. The concert was very well attended. The musicians really put on a great show. Thanks to all who made this possible!
A quick update on our construction projects. First, this week, no fire alarms. That is very good. Bob S. continued on his work in the stage area basement. The project is coming along nicely. We are getting ready to install new exit signs and fire strobes in that area.
Steve D. and Darin M. made a visit to the Strand this week. They ran the wire to the second spotlight location on the south side of the balcony. We are now ready for our second spot. If you were at the show on Saturday, you could see what a great addition a follow spot light is to the Strand. Strand board member Cody V. is taking care of keeping that portion of the shows running smoothly and professionally.
This week started the power discussions at the Strand…the electrical type. We are still in desperate need of (warning tech talk ahead) 4 wire 240 volt 3 phase to feed our building. Our lighting board prefers that type of power. We are working with all involved to see if we can transition to that type of service. It will also allow us to reduce from 4 different electrical services to 1. This will be a very good thing for the Strand. This is a big and expensive project. If we are to remain successful, we need to upgrade the electricity in our building. You might remember that we still cannot run our popcorn machine at the same time as our stage lights! The new system will take care of all those problems. As with everything else we do, this will be well planned. When it is time to install the components, we will be very careful to make the changes with sensitivity to our historic building.
Kudos to Gordon H. for doing the nasty job of the week. Last week you might recall Steve and I did one of those jobs (check out our web site for the pictures). This week it was a light bulb that needed replaced. Not just any light bulb…the bulb in our center aisle floor light furthest from the tunnel entrance. Gordon donned his miner gear and sallied thought the tunnel to the offending fixture. Our tunnel under the auditorium is really big going in, but the farther east you travel, the tighter is gets. Gordon was as far as he could go. It was cozy, but hey, the light bulb is replaced!
Technology marches on….and so do we. This email might come through our new, dedicated, fancy Strand Theatre Weekly Email Account. We intend to use this email address only for these dispatches. Look for it soon. It is weekly email@strand-theatre-shelbyville.org
Next week we have two events. Tuesday March 17th put on your green and join us at the Strand for the first in our lecture series. The Strand Lecture Series will kick off with an interesting and informative lecture on the theatre pipe organ. The theatre pipe organ has played a central part in the Strand project. You will learn about the history, technology and the musicians that played these instruments. We will listen to some great music and see some beautiful pictures (on our new screen too!). There will be several theatre pipe organ parts for our petting zoo in the Cabaret Area. These components are all from theatre organs built in the 1920′s. We hope to see you there as we welcome in a new chapter in Strand events.
On Wednesday March 18th the Strand will be represented at the Trade Fair sponsored by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. This is a great chance for us to help "spread the word". Stop by our booth and say hello!
Again, thank you for all the support. With an audience of almost 200 this weekend, the Strand is slowly building a larger audience. We appreciate all the kind words and efforts. As many of you know, we have still not solicited for any funds. It is heartwarming to see the un-solicited donations constantly being made to the Blue River Community Foundation on our behalf. We live in a great community! Thank you.
